For Monkey
The short film “For Ape,” a co-production with producer Indra Baars. The film is directed by Everon Jackson Hooi (actor in GTST and Buladó, among others) and based on an incident from co-producer Indra Baars’ childhood.
For Monkey tells the story of Nila (age 8), the only black girl in the class. When her best friend Rein (age 8) suggests to the teacher that Nila should play the role of a monkey in the school musical, the teacher panics and a discussion ensues among the adults about racism, a discussion the children don’t understand. They just wonder, “Why can’t Nila play a monkey?”
